Crorey Lawton, son of Mac &
Patty Lawton, is working in Guatemala on an archaelogical dig and
this is his ongoing journal. The laboratory where he is doing
analysis is located in Antigua,
Guatemala, in the highlands near the capital, Guatemala
City. Field research will be conducted in the lowlands to the
north, on the shores of Lake Peten Itza. Crorey is looking at
stone tool use among the ancient Maya, particularly focusing his
research on the site of Trinidad de Nosotros, a Late Classic (AD
600-900) port site on Lake Peten Itza in the Department El Peten,
Guatemala. His research involves looking at microscopic evidence left
on the tools about how the tools were used, and will involve
excavations, survey, mapping, replication experiments (one of his
proposals involves the making of a dugout canoe with stone tools) and
microscopic analysis of the resulting use-wear on the tools.
If you would like to contact
Crorey and wish him well or comment on
his journal please feel free to do so...
